In Tom’s Hardware preview of Trinity desktop APU’s, enabling Open CL cut the file compression time by ~42% on the Llano APU.
I tested that version of WinZip on my overclocked A8-3870K (CPU @ 3.2 GHz / iGPU @ 757 MHz). Driver version is AMD Catalyst 12.8 and OS is Windows 7 64-bit
I used LZMA for the file compression method.
## Test 1 ##
105-MB archive (69MB of JPG files and one 36-MB FLV video)
WinZip (no Open CL) – 19 seconds
WinZip (with Open CL) – 12 seconds
compression time was reduced by 36.8%
## Test 2 ##
69MB of JPG files
WinZip (no Open CL) – 12 seconds
WinZip (with Open CL) – 6 seconds
compression time was reduced by 50%
The iGPU really helped a lot. I hope more applications will support Open CL 🙂
There is a beta version of HandBrake that supports Open CL. Unfortunately, it is not available for public download, only review sites are given copies of it
